If you engage a person or company to provide security services, they must be licensed.
Licensed roles
The following security industry roles must be licensed:
- bodyguards, who provide close personal protection services
- private investigators, who obtain and provide information about another person without their consent, such as doing surveillance or investigating a person’s disappearance
- crowd controllers, who maintain order in and around a public place, such as a hotel or sporting event
- cash transit security officers, who carry cash or other valuables
- unarmed security officers, who guard, patrol or watch another person’s property without a guard dog or weapon
- monitoring security officers, who monitor property using an electronic monitoring devices such as a visual recording system, a radio or remote alarm system
- dog patrol security officers, who guard, patrol or watch another person’s property with a guard dog
- security advisers, who provide advice about security equipment, methods or principles
- security equipment installers, who install, repair, service or maintain security equipment
- security firms, who are people, partnerships or corporations that engage security providers.
Checking a licence
Ask the provider to show you their licence. Ensure the provider is licensed to perform the work you need them to do. Also check that the licence has not expired.
