Check a licence

We keep a public register of all licensed motor dealers, salespeople and firms. You can search this register online for free.

Search the register

The free online register is for your information only. You cannot use it as evidence in legal proceedings.

If you need a record of your search, you will need to contact us for an official extract. You will need to pay a fee of $15.50.

The record will show:

  • the name of each person who holds the licence
  • their registered business name (if any) and place of business
  • the status of the licence—current, expired, refused, cancelled or suspended
  • their licence number and class.

We can send an extract to you within 10 working days.

What’s changing

New laws will come into effect in late 2014, including:

  • Motor Dealers and Chattel Auctioneers Act 2014
  • Motor Dealers and Chattel Auctioneers Regulation 2014
  • Agents Financial Administration Act 2014
Until then, you will still need to follow the Property Agents and Motor Dealers Act 2000 and regulations.

The new law will reduce red tape for your business.

Until this time, you must continue to follow the existing laws.

The new laws will not affect how you can do a licence check.
