While doing some Christmas shopping, Mrs Murphy bought a pair of inline skates for her son, Jason. He´d already picked out the pair he wanted and Mrs Murphy bought them from a sporting goods store for $110.
The following weekend, Mrs Murphy noticed the same pair of skates for $99 in another store. She asked the store to put them on hold while she returned the more expensive pair.
When Mrs Murphy tried to return the skates to the sporting goods store, the attendant asked if there was a fault with them. Mrs Murphy explained that there was nothing wrong with them but she simply did not want them anymore and wanted a refund.
The attendant explained that the store did not have to give Mrs Murphy a refund.
What should Mrs Murphy have done in this situation?
Mrs Murphy should have visited several shops before buying the inline skates. She also could have done online research or called a number of stores before buying.
In this case, Mrs Murphy spoke with a manager who offered her store credit in exchange for the skates. The store was within its rights to refuse a refund, but the manager felt that giving store credit would ensure Mrs Murphy returned as a happy customer.
