Mutual recognition |
You cannot legally use an interstate or New Zealand licence or certificate in Queensland. You must apply for mutual recognition of your licence or certificate (an equivalent licence or certificate).
Corporations cannot apply for mutual recognition. If you intend to trade as a corporation, you must also apply for a corporation licence.
Before operating in Queensland you must give us the address of your principal place of business in Queensland.
When you have lodged a fully completed mutual recognition licence application with a copy of your current equivalent interstate or New Zealand licence you can commence work in Queensland. You can continue to work whilst your application is being processed, as long as your interstate licence remains current. You must be able to show a licence if an inspector asks.
Applying for mutual recognition
To apply:
- complete the appropriate form:
- pay the application fee:
- $1124.50 for one year or $2105.85 for three years (licence application)
- $265.20 for one year or $445.55 for three years (certificate of registration application)
- attach a copy of your current interstate or New Zealand licence
- provide originals or certified copies of your identification, such as a drivers licence, passport, birth certificate, birth extract or Certificate of Australian Citizenship (see below for instructions on getting your documents certified). If you've changed your name, you need to show proof of this change by including a certified copy of your marriage certificate or change of name certificate
- two recent passport-sized photographs, certified by someone who has known you for at least 12 months but is not a relative, by blood or marriage, or a de-facto partner (for salesperson certificates of registration or commercial agent licences only)
- pay the criminal history check fee of $35.90
- lodge your application (see lodgement options on the application form).
Criminal history checks
Applicants must undergo a criminal history check to confirm their suitability.
The criminal history check costs $35.90 (which includes $1.13 GST) for each person who appears on the application form. The fee applies to all applications and renewal notices.
Processing time
Processing time is 4-6 weeks. However, it can take longer if we need to contact you for missing information or fees.
The processing time may be up to six weeks because the criminal history check process, handled by the Queensland Police Service, is thorough and time consuming.
Send certified documents
Take the original document and a copy to a Justice of the Peace, Commissioner for Declarations, solicitor, barrister or a Notary Public. They will stamp and/or sign the copy and write ´This is a true copy of the original document´.
The Department of Justice and Attorney-General has a list of JPs in your area. Otherwise, contact your local post office, courthouse, bank, shopping centre manager or pharmacy who may be able to advise on the location of local JPs.
Please note that a photocopy is not a certified document.
Refunds
Depending on your circumstances, you may be entitled to a partial refund if you withdraw your application or it is refused. We will also refund any unused criminal history check fees or fingerprinting fees.
