Register a business name

If you operate a business in Queensland, you must register your business with us. It is illegal to use an unregistered business name in Queensland.

If you use all or part of your own name, you do not need to register it as a business name. If you add anything to your name, for example John Smith Electrics, you must register it as a business name.

Reasons to register a business name

You need to show the bank a business name certificate before you can open an account. Many organisations, including credit providers, are wary of operators without a business name and will ask for proof of registration.

Registration gives a business credibility. Consumers and suppliers can also search a register of business names to identify a business’s owners. See business names search.

Occupational licences

If you work in certain professions and industries in Queensland, you may need a licence.
