Your obligations in using a business name

Printable view Printable view

Displaying a business name

You must display your registered business name in a conspicuous position outside each of your Queensland business locations.

You must publish your name on all business correspondence and documents, such as business letters, invoices, account statements, publications, official notices, orders and receipts.

When we send you a certificate of name registration, you don´t have to display this at your business premises. However, we recommend that you do.

Renewing registration

To keep using your business name you need to renew your registration before the expiry date. We offer discounts if you renew for three years.

See renew a business name.

Changing details

If there are any changes to business ownership, the names of business owners or business addresses, you must tell us within one month of the change.

See update business name details.
See change a business name (to correct spelling errors).

Closing down

If you are closing down, you must tell us within one month of doing so.

See cancel a business name.

Trademarks and business names

Registering a business name does not give you the same rights as registering a trademark.

You do not own this name or have exclusive rights to use the name or any words in the name, as you do when you register a trademark.

If you want to protect your business name from use by a competitor, you´ll need to register. You can then control the use of the name or any part of the name. For more about trademarks, visit the IP Australia website.
