You cannot legally use an interstate or New Zealand licence or certificate in Queensland. You must apply for mutual recognition of your licence or certificate to work (an equivalent licence or certificate).
Tasmania does not have an equivalent motor dealer licence, so Tasmanians will have to apply for a new Queensland licence.
You can continue working with your interstate or New Zealand licence if it remains current while we process your application. Please show the licence to an inspector if asked.
Before operating in Queensland you must give us of the address of your principal place of business in Queensland.
Corporations cannot apply for a licence transfer. If you are a corporation, you will need to apply for a new Queensland corporate licence.
Applying for mutual recognition
To apply:
- complete the appropriate form:
- pay the application fee:
- for a motor dealer licence: $1060 for one year or $1985 for three years
- for a motor salesperson certificate: $250 for one year or $420 for three years
- attach a copy of your current interstate or New Zealand licence
- provide originals or certified copies of your identification, such as a drivers licence, passport, birth certificate, birth extract, Certificate of Australian Citizenship or deed poll (see below for instructions on getting documents certified). If you’ve changed your name (e.g. surname) you need to show proof of this change by including a certified copy of your marriage certificate or deed poll certificate
- two recent passport-sized photographs certified by an adult that has known the applicant at least 12 months (not relatives by blood or marriage, or a de-facto partner)
- pay the criminal history check fee of $35.50
- lodge your application (see lodgement options on the application form).
Criminal history checks
Applicants must undergo a criminal history check to confirm their suitability.
The criminal history check costs $35.50 (which includes $1.13 GST) for each person who appears on the application form. The fee applies to all applications and renewal notices.
Processing time
Processing time is 4-6 weeks. However, it can take longer if we need to contact you for missing information or fees.
The processing time may be up to six weeks because the criminal history check process, handled by Queensland Police, is thorough and time consuming.
Making the process quicker
Send certified documents
Take the original document and a copy to a Justice of the Peace, Commissioner for Declarations, solicitor, barrister or a Notary Public. They will stamp and/or sign the copy and write ‘This is a true copy of the original document’.
The Department of Justice and Attorney-General has a list of JPs in your area. Otherwise, contact your local post office, courthouse, bank, shopping centre manager or pharmacy.
We will send your original documents to you after we assess your application. Please note that a photocopy is not a certified document.
Pay all criminal history check fees
Remember to pay a separate fee for yourself and each person on the application form.
Refunds for unsuccessful applications
If your application is unsuccessful or it is withdrawn, you will receive a partial refund. Your application fee is non-refundable, but we will refund your licence fee and any unused criminal history check fees.
