Follow these seven important tips to ensure your holiday accommodation is safe for you and your children.

  1. Avoid bunk beds for children. If the accommodation only has bunk beds, ensure the top bunk has guardrails and there are no gaps that could trap your child's head. For more information, see bunk bed mandatory safety standards.

  2. If you are hiring a portable cot, ask the supplier if it complies with the Australian Standard. Make sure the sides and ends are fully locked in when the cot is in use. For more information, see cot mandatory safety standards.

  3. Make sure any blind or curtain cords are out of reach of small children. Children have been strangled when they have become tangled in long cords. Make sure couches, beds or cots are not close enough to blinds or curtains for a child to reach the cord. For more information, see blind and curtain cord mandatory safety standards.

  4. Keep furniture away from the balcony edge. Make sure children do not climb on balcony furniture or railings.

  5. Make sure there is a hot water tempering device in the bathroom that will prevent the hot water temperature exceeding approximately 50 degrees Celsius.

  6. Never submerge your head in a spa as hair can become entangled in the filter and cause drowning. Never leave children alone in a spa and always supervise children around pool areas.

  7. Don't allow children to climb on the furniture, as it may topple over.
