Firm membership of an association |
All Queensland security firms are required to be a member of an approved security industry association.
The Security Providers Act 1993 empowers approved security industry associations to take on a key role of improving the integrity of the security industry. This role supplements the compliance activities we conduct.
List of approved security industry associations
The following is a list of approved security industry associations (listed alphabetically). Your firm must be a member of one of these associations:

If your firm is a member of an association not on this list, it means that the association has not been approved by us, and you are not considered to have an active membership with an approved security industry association.
If your firm does not have an active membership with an approved security industry association, your licence may be cancelled.
Security firms cannot legally operate without a licence.
If you are a member of an association and believe your association should be listed here, you should contact your association.
Association membership and compliance audits
Associations are required to offer genuine and accessible services relevant to security firms. For example, they may offer professional development training and provide information and advice about your legal obligations as a security firm.
Approved security industry associations must have a code of conduct in place, which your security firm will need to comply with to remain a member.
Associations will also undertake compliance audits of their member security firms at least once every three years. The purpose of the compliance audit is to ensure that the security firm is adhering to the association´s code of conduct, thereby ensuring that each firm is meeting basic behavioural benchmarks.
The compliance audit must be conducted by a certified accountant, who acts independently and in compliance with auditing and assurance standards.
It is the role of the association to determine how the audit will be conducted.
Approved security industry associations will be entitled to charge membership fees to cover their costs as well as fees to cover the cost of the audit. As some approved associations have the cost of the audit included in their membership fee, you should ask about this when considering which association to join.
We do not regulate the fee amounts, so your firm will need to decide which association offers you the best deal in terms of the services it offers and the fees it charges.
Changing associations
If you choose to change associations or your membership is cancelled, your firm must become a member of another approved security industry association within 60 days of the membership cancelation with your former association.
You must notify our Industry Licensing Unit in writing within seven days of membership cancelation. Please include:
- your security firm name and licence number
- the name of your former association and the date of your membership cancellation.
You must also notify our Industry Licensing Unit in writing within seven days of joining a new approved association. Please include:
- your security firm name and licence number
- proof of membership with your new approved association, including the date your membership became active.
