Consultation on Commonwealth Business Names Registration Bill 2011

Printable view Printable view

Consultation has now opened on the suite of legislation supporting the Commonwealth Business Names Registration Bill 2011.

As part of the Council of Australian Government´s commitment to reduce the regulatory burden on business, a national business names register, underpinned by Commonwealth legislation will commence in 2012.

All states and territories presently operate their own business names systems. In Queensland, this system is administered under the Business Names Act 1962. Currently, businesses operating in more than one state or territory need to register their business name separately in each jurisdiction. The proposed national business names register will replace all existing state and territory business names registration systems with a single national system.

Under the new system, businesses will be required to register their business name nationally, through the Australian Securities and Investment Commission.

The bills, explanatory memoranda and frequently asked questions can be found on the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research website.

Consultation closed on 24 April 2011.
