Get your car repaired

Find a reputable repairer

Make sure the repairer you choose is:

  • reputable
  • qualified to do the job
  • has access to the right equipment.

If you continue to deal with one reliable repairer:

  • it builds up a service history for your car
  • they can provide you with better advice on upcoming repairs.

Make sure you are aware of your rights under your vehicle’s warranty.

Get at least two quotes

You should get at least two written quotes for any repairs or services. Estimates are often verbal and approximate, while quotes are more specific and itemise the work to be done.

The quote should outline the repairs and cost for both parts and labour.

The repairer may need to look at your car to do a written quote. Before you leave your car, check if there is a cost involved.

You shouldn’t feel pressured into having repairs done to your car. Ask the repairer to explain the fault without using technical jargon. If you are unsure about the repairs or they sound expensive, shop around for other quotes and advice.

Explain all problems clearly

You should be clear and specific when you explain your vehicle’s problems to the repairer. The more they know about your vehicle, the easier it will be to find and fix the problem.

Do not:

  • ask the repairer to do specific repairs
  • diagnose the problem yourself.

If you ask for a specific repair and it doesn’t fix the problem, you can’t hold the repairer liable.

Check payment terms

Before you commit to the repairer, check the terms of payment.

If you can’t pay and don’t make a financial arrangement, the repairer can keep your car until you pay.

Authorise all repairs

You should authorise all repairs that are going to be done by the repairer.

This includes:

  • when the repairer firsts looks at the vehicle
  • work additional to the original quote.

Get an itemised account

Before you pay for repairs, ask the repairer for an itemised account.

The itemised account should include:

  • a description of the work done
  • labour charges
  • parts
  • any warranties that apply.

Make sure you get a receipt and keep it with your car records.

The repairer should be able to tell you why a part needs to be replaced. If you want to keep any of the replaced parts, you must tell the repairer before they start work on your car.

Always keep a record of repairs and services done on your car.

The records will assist you:

  • with any warranty or repair disputes
  • when selling, it shows that you have looked after your car.
