Bunk beds regulation consultation

Printable view Printable view

The Queensland Government has released a consultation draft of the Fair Trading (Safety Standards) Regulation 2011 (the regulation). The purpose of the regulation is to improve child safety by requiring short-term accommodation premises to comply with a mandatory safety standard for bunk beds.

The regulation will apply to people who provide short-term accommodation services, where the accommodation could be used by people under 16 years of age. Under the regulation, short-term accommodation is defined as accommodation supplied in trade or commerce for a period of 60 days or less.

The safety standard proposed to be prescribed in the regulation is based on specified clauses of the Australian and New Zealand Standard for bunk beds (AS/NZS 4220:1994), which is available through the SAI Global Infostore (please note there is a cost associated with this).

All short-term accommodation providers and stakeholders are encouraged to make a written submission on the draft regulation.

Submissions closed on 10 October 2011.
