Australian Consumer Law

Printable view Printable view

Have your say on the development of the Australian Consumer Law (ACL). The ACL will replace most of the consumer protection provisions in the Queensland Fair Trading Act, and those in fair trading legislation in other States and Territories, on 1 January 2011. The first Commonwealth ACL bill introducing key elements of the law including unfair contract terms, civil pecuniary penalties, disqualification orders and consumer redress was passed in March 2010. A second ACL bill is now being considered by the Commonwealth's Senate Economics Committee.

This bill intends to introduce further key aspects of the law including consumer protection against misleading or unconscionable conduct, unfair contracts and practices, consumer guarantees, unsolicited selling, information standards and product safety. The Senate Economics Committee is inviting submissions to assist their inquiry. Submissions closed on 16 April 2010. The reporting date is 21 May 2010.
