Car boot traders spotted |
The Office of Fair Trading has received reports about car boot traders operating in the Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton,Toowoomba, Mackay, Airlie Beach and Proserpine areas.
Fair Trading is warning consumers to avoid buying from car boot traders. Often items sold in these circumstances are overpriced, stolen, damaged, or do not live up to what is promised. Even if a trader is offering a warranty, it will be of no use once the trader vanishes afterwards. Buyers have no way to get a refund, exchange the items, or have it fixed if it's faulty.
Protect yourself by following these tips:
- be cautious of traders who won't provide identification or who only have an email address or mobile phone number as their main point of contact
- be cautious of traders who operate out of rental vehicles or vehicles registered in another state.
If you believe you have been a victim of a scam, lodge a complaint through the OFT website or by calling 13 QGOV (13 74 68).
